An AI sales agent is software that does sales work on its own. It researches who to sell to, writes and sends the messages, answers questions and objections, follows up, and books the meeting or closes the sale, without a person drafting every step. Unlike a chatbot, it doesn't wait to be asked: it pursues a goal. Unlike a copilot, it doesn't suggest: it executes. A person supervises and decides.
Short definition
An AI sales agent (also called an AI SDR or virtual sales rep) is a system built on language models that takes a sales goal, for example "book meetings with HR directors at companies of 50 to 500 people" or "answer our Instagram DMs and sell the membership", and works on its own to reach it:
- Decides who to contact or how to reply based on your offer and your ideal customer.
- Acts in real channels: sends messages, answers chats, proposes times, logs data.
- Remembers the context of every conversation and every customer.
- Measures what works and adjusts.
The key word is agent: it has the autonomy to carry out multi-step tasks, not just generate text.
AI sales agent vs chatbot vs copilot
All three use AI, but they do different jobs:
| Chatbot | Sales copilot | AI sales agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who starts | The customer writes first | The rep asks for something | The agent, from a goal |
| What it produces | Answers to questions | Drafts, summaries, suggestions | Full conversations and outcomes (meetings, sales) |
| Who executes | The bot replies but doesn't move the sale forward | The rep copies, edits and sends | The agent sends, follows up and books |
| Goal | Resolve a query | Save the rep time | Build pipeline or close sales |
| Example | "What are your hours?" → "9 to 6" | "Draft a message for this prospect" | "Get 20 meetings this month with this customer profile" |
Many WhatsApp or Instagram chatbots run on fixed flows ("press 1, 2 or 3"). An agent understands free-form language, handles objections ("too expensive", "not now") and steers the conversation toward a concrete action.
What an AI sales agent does, step by step
- Understands what you sell. Reads your website, your materials or a description and builds a value proposition per segment.
- Defines who to sell to. Proposes ideal customer profiles (industry, size, role, main pain).
- Finds and prioritizes. In outbound, it finds decision-makers and ranks them by likelihood to respond.
- Writes personal messages. Each message mentions something real about the prospect or their company, in your voice.
- Converses. Answers questions, handles objections and follows up when there's no reply.
- Qualifies. Detects interest, budget and timing, and filters out poor fits.
- Books or closes. Proposes times and puts the meeting on your calendar, or closes the sale in chat.
- Logs everything. Updates the CRM with every touch, reply and outcome.
- Learns. Compares which messages and segments convert best and adjusts the strategy.
Two different jobs: B2B prospecting and chat sales
B2B prospecting (outbound)
Here the agent does the job of an SDR (Sales Development Representative): it goes out to find customers. It finds decision-makers at companies that match your ideal customer, writes to them on B2B social networks or email, follows up and books a qualified meeting with your team. The outcome that matters is meetings with decision-makers, not messages sent.
Chat sales (inbound)
Here the agent handles people who already write to you: Instagram, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp messages coming from ads, posts or referrals. It replies in seconds, asks what it needs to, recommends the right product or plan, sends the payment link or books a visit. The outcome that matters is closed sales and leads that don't go cold.
The same business often needs both. An agency prospects companies through outbound and answers inquiries on WhatsApp. A gym sells memberships on Instagram and looks for corporate deals.
Why now
- Sales reps spend 70% of their time on non-selling tasks: data entry, research, internal meetings (Salesforce, State of Sales, 6th edition).
- In September 2023, Gartner estimated that by 2028, 60% of B2B seller work will be executed through conversational user interfaces via generative AI, up from less than 5% in 2023 (summary).
- In Latin America and Spain, much of selling already happens on WhatsApp and Instagram. Replying fast, at any hour, is no longer optional.
What it can and can't do
A good AI sales agent can:
- Hold hundreds of personal conversations at once, 24/7.
- Reply in seconds, when a chat lead converts best.
- Do every follow-up, without forgetting.
- Keep every interaction logged and measurable.
It doesn't replace:
- A good offer. If the product doesn't help the customer, AI only speeds up the "no".
- The human relationship in complex sales. Gartner expects that by 2030, 75% of B2B buyers will prefer sales experiences that prioritize human interaction (Gartner, 2025). The agent gets the meeting; your team closes.
- Your judgment. Review the strategy, approve messages at first and set what it must never say.
How to choose an AI sales agent
Before you hire one, check:
- Channels. Does it work where your customers are? B2B social networks and email for outbound; Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp for inbound.
- Autonomy with control. Can you approve messages, pause campaigns and see every conversation?
- Official APIs. On WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, does it connect through Meta's official APIs? That's what protects your accounts.
- Language. Does it write well in every language your customers speak?
- CRM. Does it sync with the CRM you already use?
- Time to first result. How many days from setup to the first meeting or sale?
- How it's measured. Ask for outcome metrics (meetings, sales, reply rate), not just activity (messages sent).
Metrics to measure a sales agent
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Reply rate | Whether the messages and the segment are right |
| Meetings booked (and show rate) | Whether conversations reach a concrete action |
| Time to first reply (chat) | Whether leads get answered before they go cold |
| Chat conversion rate | What share of conversations ends in a sale |
| Cost per meeting or per sale | Whether the channel pays off against the alternatives |
Where Theos fits
Theos is an AI sales agent that covers both jobs with one agent: B2B prospecting (finds decision-makers, writes in your voice and books meetings) and chat sales (answers every Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp message and closes the sale). It runs on Meta's official APIs, since Theos is a Meta Business Partner, and syncs with Salesforce, HubSpot, Odoo and Attio.
So far it has managed more than 1.3 million contacts and 300,000 conversations, with a 40%+ reply rate. We explain it with an analogy in Theos: Claude Code for sales, and you can see real results in our customer stories.
To try it, create your account and tell Theos what you sell.
FAQ
It replaces the repetitive part of an SDR's job: finding prospects, writing, following up and booking. People stay key for setting strategy, running meetings and closing complex deals. In practice, a small team with an agent performs like a much bigger one.
No. A chatbot usually follows fixed flows and only replies. An AI sales agent understands free-form language, handles objections, remembers context and moves the conversation to an action: a meeting, a payment or a visit. It can also start conversations (outbound), not just wait.
A clear description of what you sell (or your website), who you sell it to and the channels you want to use. With that the agent builds the strategy; you review it, connect your channels and go live.
It depends on how it connects. On Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, the safe way is Meta's official APIs. On B2B social networks, look for conservative activity, message approval and pauses when an account needs attention.
Good agents write naturally in both Spanish and English and adapt to your brand's tone. Ask for real message examples in your language before choosing.
